A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
